August Update

Update for the August 2023 period.

“Can Potatoes Feed the World?” I reckon I could survive with potatoes, mince with an egg poached in it and peas. That was often a Monday night's tea when I was a lad. Lovely. My mouth is watering just thinking about it.

Dr John Bradshaw gave us an in depth, interesting talk about potatoes, the history, their qualities, and from where they originated, and Walter Raleigh was not mentioned once. That destroyed a few schoolboy history lessons.

The James Hutton Institute at Errol, between Perth and Dundee, is where true seed populations of different potatoes are established. There are many different diseases associated with potatoes and it is always best to buy seed tubers from a good and trusted source. One such source close to here is Freuchie Garden Centre where there are many varieties of seed potato available to buy.

Our next meeting in September is the DBHS Annual Show. This takes place on Saturday 2nd September 2023 with set up on the Friday. Everyone is welcome. Judging takes place from 10:00am and the show will open to the public from 12:30pm. The cost is £1.00 per adult. Children are free.

Please come along and add to the atmosphere. Trophies will be presented at 4:00pm. The Dalgety Gala Team will run the Tea Room in the Kabin. Donations of cake ae always welcome there.

The “Jobs for” August part of the DBHS report is on the tips page to see what jobs you should be doing at this time of year.

Sincerely,

Michael Gourlay

Chairman
